Second Life Interviews (Second Life Names)


Arij Pevensey is a student (majoring in chemistry for three years now) who is interested in molecular structures and joined Second Life in order to see 3-D molecules.
Georgianna Blackburn is an e-marketer (for Sigma Aldrich for two years now, but has worked for Sigma Aldrich for 2 years prior) who is interested in drug delivery and joined Second Life in order to investigate new technologies and study future implications.
Hiro Sheridan is a professor (of mathematics @ ORU and has been a professional mathematician for 11 years now) who is interested in physical chemistry and multi-dimensional chemical data visualization and joined Second Life in order to explore distance education (but is now creating multi-dimensional chemical data visualizations in Second Life).

Second Life Interviews

- Horace Moody (Jean-Claude Bradley, Ph.D.) is a chemistry professor at Drexel University. He went to college in Canada, receiving his undergraduate degree from Laurentian University, and his Ph.D. from University of Ottawa. His current research is in the field of organic chemistry, specifically on new anti-malarial compounds. He is an advocate of making research open to others whenever possible. Posting data and results on the internet allows for greater collaboration and progress.
- Rudy Valeska was a professor of analytical chemistry, general chemistry, quantitative analysis, instrumental methods, and advanced instrumental methods at a state university. Now he works for NASA and is a visiting professor for an HBCU. He gives NASA technical advise on materials used in the solid rocket boosters, compatibility between propellants and the materials used in propulsion systems; and development of new propellants. He also mentors college interns at NASA every summer.
- Eloise Pasteur has studied microbiology, immunology, human metabolism&control, and pharmacology in her academic career. She teaches students with dyslexia and Asperger's syndrome.

- Bill Romanos <http://friendfeed.com/billromanos> is a pre-med student. He used to be an attorney for some aerospace and defense companies. He is interested in medicine and all sciences.
- Mikhail Lemeshko <http://friendfeed.com/lemeshko> is a second-year PhD student in molecular physics at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. He is from Russia and got his B.S. in Physics and M.S. in Condensed Matter Physics in Russia. Now he works mainly with theoretical treatment of molecules in electric, magnetic and radiative fields, including field-dressed molecular collisions.

This tool uses a miniblock that has room for 48 tubes, each 3.5mL. The bottom has a
valve that can be opened to filter the tubes. It allows you to "run reactions in parallel".
The machine has a robotic syringe arm that can precisely add liquid to any of the
tubes on the miniblock.

- Marcus McCurdy <http://friendfeed.com/marcusmccurdy> is a research engineer at Drexel. He worked for the government before coming to Drexel, and now he does computer networking research. He thinks friend feed is a good tool and wishes more of his friends were aware of it.

1. Hinami Silvercloud - She said she is a student majoring in chemistry. She enjoys organic chemistry and plays SecondLife because she likes the atmosphere.
2. Livinlna Dreamscape - She prefers inorganic chemistry and she is also a student. On SecondLife she likes to make little purple balls fly.
3. Nathaniel Giordano - He is also a student from where I know not. He is currently on his break but he prefers organic chemistry. In the below pictures, the two characters are me and him.

FriendFeed

1. Duncan Hull - He works at Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre where they are developing techniques for linking biochemical pathway data to the primary evidence in PubMed. He loves what he does and he said it's important to be passionate about what you do as a scientist. He likes FriendFeed because it is a relatively neutral place where many like-minded people can share and discuss things online.
2. Rueben Ramirez - He is a microbiology student at Oklahoma State University. He has been a computer science major up until recently. He hopes to combine his experience in computer science with microbiology for a masters in Bioinformatics.

1. Andrew Namiboo is a student at Carnegie Mellon University studying civil engineering. He was having trouble visualizing and comprehending certain chemistry concepts when it was recommended he try using Second Life. He did and, using his network of friends, he is now able to find lectures and information online that helps him to better understand hazy concepts. He also claims that being able to see certain things in a 3D way has benefited his chemistry knowledge greatly.
2. Humai Topaz is a junior student at NYU studying Biology. She first turned to Second Life as a leisure activity, and soon found herself on the online campuses of many of the schools that have Second Life accounts. She attended a lecture on one of these campuses and was shocked to see that online lectures were handled very well, and they were extremely helpful. Now her Second Life account is a back-up learning vessel.
3. Brigesh Redyard is a student at Drexel University who joined Second Life as a leisure activity. As time progressed, he realized that, on Second Life he can learn a lot of new things. He said he is interested in Chemistry because, in his opinion, it is the most accessible science, and he then said Second Life gives him more abilities to explore chemistry in an interactive world.
